A skeleton, walking in a plague doctor mask with roses growing out

2015

20cm x 20cm (approx 7.5″ x 7.5″)

Acrylic, watercolour and pastel on Arches 300gsm paper

A skeleton in a plague doctor mask with roses sprouting out walks in a desolate landscape.
For this piece I was thinking about how plague doctors used to fill the beak part of the mask with aromatic herbs and plants to ward away the ‘miasmas’ that they believed caused the plague. What if the organic matter in the beak sprouted and reanimated the plague doctor?
