Robed memento mori skeleton

2025

40cm x 35cm (approx 15.75″ x 13.75″)

Acrylic, gouache, watercolour and pastel on mounted Arches 300gsm paper

Painted for a group show with the theme Memento Mori.

The banner across the figure reads “Omnes duae manent noctes” (Two nights await us all, in Latin) – this is a reference to Horace’s “Omnes una manet nox” (One night awaits us all), about the inevitability of death.

Our physical bodies may die, but we have all left digital traces of ourselves in the form of social media profiles, forum posts, blogs, websites. When these platforms are abandoned, websites are deleted, servers are shut down and wiped, this is a kind of second death – the second night that awaits us.
